As Congress reconvenes this week, its main order of business will be to pass another reconciliation bill to fund the government.
While GOP lawmakers are likely to discuss how to end the current partial shutdown and fund other Republican priorities, U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) hopes to pack the bill with “as much stuff as we can get” to help the American people and forward President Donald Trump’s agenda.
“It doesn’t need to be skinny,” Tuberville said Monday on Fox Business Network’s “Kudlow.” “We need to do the Save America Act. We need to fund the war. We need to do whatever President Trump needs to do with DHS, TSA. Take care of everybody that the Democrats care less about. They could care less about doing anything for the people of this country. They just want to make things hard for President Trump… Let’s put as much stuff in there as we can get.”
He continued, “We got seven more months left in this year. Whatever we do in this reconciliation, whether it’s skinny or fat or whatever you want to call it, it’ll be the only thing that we’ll get done for the American people and President Trump for the rest of the year. This’ll be it… We won’t get any more legislation passed. We won’t get any policy done. We won’t be able to help the American people. So, as you said, let’s do it this time. Whether it takes five days or five weeks, let’s put everything we can in there and try to push it through with 51 votes and take care of the American people… This is going to be our Big Beautiful Bill of this year, so let’s take advantage of it.”
Tuberville said that by making a show of good faith in passing a substantial bill, it could be enough to help the GOP hold onto the House and Senate in the November midterms.
“This is an election year, by the way. So we can really show people that we’re really working for them for once in a lifetime, and hopefully keep the House and the Senate,” he said.
