WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) joined U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) in introducing the Safeguarding Women from Chemical Abortion Act to withdraw approval of the dangerous mifepristone abortion drug and to empower women who were harmed by taking the drug to sue its manufacturers.
“It’s a shame that the federal government has allowed George Soros-funded drug manufacturers to get rich while women suffer from this dangerous abortion drug,” said Sen. Tuberville. “One in ten women who take this drug suffer serious health problems and it needs to be banned. These companies need to be put out of business and forced to pay the price for the damage they’ve caused. I’m proud to join this legislation with Sen. Hawley to ban mifepristone and empower the women who have been harmed to hold these pharmaceutical companies accountable.”
One recent study found that nearly 11% of women who use mifepristone experience sepsis, infection, hemorrhaging, an emergency room visit, or another serious adverse event within 45 days. Shady corporate manufacturers of the abortion drug are profiting handsomely while women are harmed. The maker of mifepristone, Danco Laboratories, first registered in the Cayman Islands and received backing from prominent liberal billionaires, including George Soros and private equity managers. Its ownership structure is designed to evade scrutiny and escape liability. In 2022, the company’s CFO said investments in the company had been “extremely profitable.” Chemical abortion rates, and the harm to women, have only increased since then.
The Safeguarding Women from Chemical Abortion Act would:
- Withdraw the FDA’s approval of mifepristone for abortion.
- Make distributing and labeling mifepristone for pregnancy termination violations of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.
- Create a private right of action for women harmed by chemical abortion to sue manufacturers for damages.

Sen. Tuberville has long been a staunch pro-life advocate, raising awareness about illegal and immoral taxpayer-funded abortions being administered at the Biden-era Department of Veterans Affairs and the Biden-era Department of Defense. Sen. Tuberville’s efforts led to the reversal of both policies under the Trump administration.
