Jasper Urologist Testifies at Senate HELP Committee Hearing

Dr. Brian Stone is the founder of Jasper Urology Associates

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), Ranking Member of the U.S. Senate HELP Subcommittee on Children and Families, today introduced Dr. Brian Stone of Jasper to testify before the committee. Dr. Stone is the President and Chief of the medical staff of Walker Baptist Regional Medical Center of Brookwood Baptist Health Systems in Jasper, Alabama. He also founded Jasper Urology Associates in 2008, which has a service area of more than one million people in Jefferson, Walker, Tuscaloosa, Fayette, Marion, Winston, Cullman, and Blount counties.

“It’s my honor to introduce today Dr. Brian Stone of Jasper, Alabama. Dr. Stone grew up in Birmingham and went on to receive his degree from Rutgers. He went on to earn his medical degree from University of Alabama at Birmingham. He was identified as a top urologist in New York and New Jersey in his years of tenure at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons. He has received so many awards for his success, it’s hard to count them all, but he’s been honored by the NAACP, Morehouse School of Medicine, the American Cancer Society, and the American Urological Association. Because of his leadership on issues like health disparities and prostate cancer, he has served in many capacities as a consultant and scientific adviser. He has served in advisory positions on the local, national, and international level over the years. He also worked in partnership with pastors and different denominations in Jefferson County and the Jefferson County Department of Health to educate and recruit black patients to participate in the clinical trials process. And he serves on the committee for underrepresented minorities at the University of Alabama Birmingham School of Medicine, in conjunction with the School of Medicine’s National Alumni Association. He created a medical scholarship program for deserving male students of color from Alabama who have been accepted into the UAB School of Medicine. The goal is to increase the number of minority physicians who are from Alabama and are willing to practice medicine in the state. He’s also worked to increase STEM exposure to K-12 students in the city of Birmingham, in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club. Doctor Stone is currently the President and Chief Medical Staff of Walker Baptist Regional Medical Center and the President of Jasper Urology Associates. DR. STONE BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Brian Stone serves as the President and Chief of the medical staff of Walker Baptist Regional Medical Center of Brookwood Baptist Health Systems in Jasper, Alabama. A commitment to excellence and good leadership is at the core of his clinical principles. He was identified as a Top Urologist in New York & New Jersey in multiple years during his tenure at Columbia University’s College of Physicians & Surgeons. He was featured in Black Enterprise as one of the nation’s top urologists.  He was awarded the Medical Excellence Award by the NAACP of Rockland County, NY.  He received the Salute to Excellence Award (with co-awardees Atlanta Mayor Maynard Jackson and actress Jane Fonda). He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Medical Science degree by the Morehouse School of Medicine. The American Cancer Society awarded Dr. Stone their highest honor in New York, the Hope Award for his leadership and work in prostate cancer early detection in high-risk populations.  He received the Charles A. Walburg Award by the American Cancer Society of NYC for his free prostate cancer program (launched in 1993) for African American men in New York City which ultimately screened over 5,000 men. He was recognized by the American Urological Association at “Prostate Educator of the Year”.

Because of his leadership on issues of health disparities and prostate cancer, he has served in many capacities as a consultant and scientific advisor. He was an executive board member of the ACS of the Bronx and Harlem, NY.  He served as a member of the Professional Education and Grants Committee of the New York City division of the ACS. He served as the physician member of the International Prostate Committee for the United Nations in Paris, France. He has served a scientific advisor for Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Mentor Corporation, Coloplast, American Medical Systems, Sanofi Pharmaceuticals and Amgen. He has served as Director of U.S. Affairs for Healing Our Village. He served on the Board of Directors for the New York’s Finest Foundation and served as a surgeon for the NYPD for almost 18 years.

Dr. Stone is currently an executive board member of the ConDUC (Consortium for Disparities in Urologic Conditions) Prostate Cancer Registry trial which is focused on addressing ethnic disparities in prostate cancer incidence, treatment, and outcomes. He is a board member of The Southern Center for Broadening Participation in STEM. He is the president of Clinical Diversity Solutions which he founded to address ethnic disparities in participation in clinical trials. He is working in partnership with pastors of different denominations in Jefferson County and the Jefferson County Department of Health to educate and recruit Black patients to participate in the clinical trials process. He serves on the Committee for Underrepresented Minorities at the UAB School of Medicine in conjunction with school of medicine national alumni association. He created the BKB Medical Scholarship for deserving male students of color from Alabama who have been accepted into the UAB School of Medicine in the amount of $25,000 per year. The goal is to increase the number of minority physicians who are from Alabama and are willing to practice medicine hear.  He is also attempting to increase STEM exposure to K-12 students in the City of Birmingham in partnership with the AG Gaston Boys and Girls Clubs of Birmingham.

Dr. Stone founded Jasper Urology Associates in 2008 when he started construction of the current office in Jasper.  His knowledge of urology, his prior experience in Academic Medicine at Columbia University, and business acumen lead to the rapid expansion of the practice. Jasper Urology has a service area of over a million people, servicing Jefferson, Walker, Tuscaloosa, Fayette, Marion, Winston, Cullman and Blount counties. The practice and grown to over 30,000 active patients. The success of the robotic surgery program developed by Dr. Stone has made Walker Baptist Medical Center the most successful program in the 500-hospital Tenet system nationally. The medical center has been the most financially successful hospital in the Brookwood Baptist Hospital system annually since 2010. He has been a leader at the hospital since his arrival and is the incoming chief of staff for the Medical Center for 2023. He is the first physician ever to be asked to serve consecutive terms on the PPEC Peer Review board for Brookwood Baptist Hospital system overseeing over 1,500 physicians at five hospitals. He is an active member of the American Urological Association, The R. Frank Jones Urological Society, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, and Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity.
