“I want to express my sincere gratitude to each of you for your dedication, bravery, and the invaluable role you play in keeping us safe.”
WASHINGTON — U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) yesterday addressed the Alabama State Fraternal Order of Police in a video message at the organization’s 76th annual conference in Opelika. In the video remarks, Senator Tuberville reiterated his unwavering support for law enforcement, gratitude for their service, and efforts in Washington to ensure officers have the training and resources needed to keep communities safe.
Excerpts from Senator Tuberville’s remarks can be found below, and his full remarks can be viewed here.
“I want to thank you for all the work you’re doing to protect people and communities across Alabama. It’s more important than ever to support law enforcement by giving you the resources necessary to do your job safely and effectively. Supporting law enforcement and recognizing the bravery and courage it takes to put on the badge every morning should not be a partisan issue. You serve as a boundary between a functioning society and a lawless one. And your work is a foundational pillar of the American justice system, which is the best in the world.”
“Unfortunately, in recent years there has been a disturbing trend of individuals and groups unfairly targeting police officers. They have called for defunding the police, disarming you through unsafe regulations, and completely dismantling your crucial institutions. This is not only misguided, it’s extremely dangerous. We must stand up for the brave men and women who risk their lives every day to protect our communities. As your senator, I promise to do just that. And I want you to know that I have your back.”
“We need to invest in training, equipment, and resources to ensure law enforcement officers can get the job done. That is why I helped introduce the Empowering Law Enforcement Act, which would give both state and local enforcement agents the ability to address intentional enforcement gaps created by radical left politicians.”
“As crime rates rise in cities across the country — including across Alabama — our police must be trained and empowered to handle every situation. Because being a law enforcement officer is one of the toughest jobs out there. You leave your family every day with a badge on your chest and gun on your side, knowing you’re prepared to put your life on the line in service to others. You stand up for us every day, and I am fully committed to standing up for you. I want to express my sincere gratitude to each of you for your dedication, bravery, and the invaluable role you play in keeping us safe.”
BACKGROUND
Senator Tuberville has previously spoken on the Senate floor to recognize National Police Week and highlight examples of outstanding law enforcement officers in Alabama.
In 2021, Senator Tuberville introduced the Empowering Law Enforcement Act to support officers and combat the Biden administration’snullification of U.S. immigration laws. The legislation would have granted state and local law enforcement inherent immigration enforcement authority to investigate, identify, apprehend, arrest, detain or transfer an illegal alien. Additionally, this legislation would provide the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary flexibility on how long a criminal alien may be detained, extending the 180-day period to ensure violent criminals are not released back into communities.
Senator Tommy Tuberville represents Alabama in the United States Senate and is a member of the Senate Armed Services, Agriculture, Veterans’ Affairs, and HELP Committees.
